UPP has no time to quarrel with anyone over party’s stand, says chief

SIBU: United People’s Party (UPP) will no longer entertain anybody who question its stand as such action would only get in the way of the party’s core mission — to serve and safeguard the interest of the people.

Party president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said his side never aimed to merely provide lip-service; instead, it genuinely wanted to serve the people.

“At this point in time, we do not want to quarrel with anyone over our stand — I’ve gotten fed up with it. What is important now is for us to go down to the ground and serve the people,” he said in his address at the ‘Solidarity Nite’ hosted by UPP Pelawan at a restaurant here on Friday, where UPP Dudong chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King and UPP Pelawan chief Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau were among those present.

Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister, viewed the coming state election would be of paramount importance to the Chinese in Sarawak in that it would decide whether there would be more Chinese representatives in the state cabinet.

He observed that the majority participation of the Bumiputeras in Barisan Nasional (BN) and the Chinese in the opposition as something that was ‘not healthy’.

“With me currently being the only Chinese minister in the state cabinet, I know the situation well.”

Wong said UPP, which had been in existence for two years, was well-liked and accepted by many people, as well as by BN.

He was confident that UPP Pelawan, under Lau’s capable leadership, as well as Tiong would face the coming polls with full determination and spirit of unity.

However, Wong acknowledged that the final decision would rest with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, in terms of picking his (Adenan’s) team to represent BN in the state election.

“With their (Tiong and Lau)’s proven leadership and credibility, they should be the most suitable candidates to represent BN in the respective (Dudong and Pelawan) constituencies.”-Borneo Post
