Lu urges SUPP, UPP to collaborate for community’s sake

KUCHING: Chinese dominant parties in the state must cast aside their differences and personal interests for the sake of the community.

Making the call, Temenggong Lu Kim Yong said it is ‘the greatest wish’ of the Chinese community to be integrated into the political mainstream.

He said with the state election approaching, collaboration of SUPP and UPP in the next state election has become talk of the town.

“Both must collaborate to regain the confidence of the Chinese voters, to recapture the lost seats, and to rebuild a strong partnership in the political mainstream to safeguard the interest and sustaining the progress of the Chinese community.”

“The greatest wish of the Chinese community is to unite and integrate into the political mainstream development,” he said in a media statement yesterday.

Lu, who is president of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Chinese Associations Sarawak, said the loss of trust from the majority of the Chinese community had caused the state’s political polarisation.

This follows the massive loss suffered by Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) in the last state election.

He asserted it was fortunate that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had proven to the Chinese community, in particular, “that he is an open-minded, far-sighted leader exercising fair and equal policies to all races.”

“He (Adenan) has on many occasions reiterated that Chinese are not ‘pendatang’. Since his appointment as chief minister last year, he has granted financial aid to Chinese schools and the grant is increasing.

“Under his leadership, Sarawak has become the first state in the country to recognise the academic qualifications of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), which has long been recognised globally.”

Lu said it was, therefore, crucial for the Chinese community to render full support to Adenan in order to secure a better future for all.-Borneo Post
